The Spine, The Nervous System & Patient Health

The Nervous System is Central

In the centralized system of the human body, a portion of the nervous system has a dominant role in coordinating information and directing responses. This centralization (Central Nervous System) consists of the brain and spinal cord. Impulses are carried to and from the brain and spinal cord by nerve fibers that make up the peripheral nervous system.

The nerves in our spinal column are sensitive to pressure and stress. When the spine becomes misaligned sufficiently it stresses the nerves, compromises their normal impulses, and changes function throughout the body.

Nerves are responsible for four primary functions:

1. Control and regulation of all vital functions including circulation, breathing and digestion
2. Activation of muscles allowing us to move
3. Our senses, perceptions and feeling
4. Relating us to the world outside ourselves including learning, experiencing and behavior

According to current scientific information, your health and well being depends on a normally functioning nervous system regardless of age or health history. Spinal distortion interferes with the normal functioning of the nervous system. To experience our full health potential, it is necessary for the nervous system to function without interference.

Protecting Your Adjustment

Now that you have initiated NUCCA care, here are some helpful hints. Protecting your adjustment and understanding how to maintain it will speed your recovery. Following Dr. Ciano’s recommendation ensures the best results. Here are a few suggestions.

1. Keep all scheduled appointments.

2. Avoid physical and mental stress after each adjustment. The more relaxed you are the better your spine will remain stabilized..

3. Follow all home care instructions for your condition. These may include such things as hot or cold packs, exercise, lifting instructions, etc.

4. Sleep on your back or on your side, never on your stomach. Ideally, you should have your neck supported while you sleep so your head is in a neutral position. To lessen the stress on your lower back, place a pillow under your calves (while on your back) or between your knees (while on your side).

5. Sit straight while in a chair, making sure that your lower back is supported.

6. Lift properly. Use your legs. Bend at the knees while keeping your back straight.

7. If any particular motion causes discomfort, avoid that motion.

8. Keep a positive attitude.

9. Be patient. Healing takes time. Ligaments and muscles must have time to re-train themselves to support the re-aligned vertebrae. This is a natural process that can’t be rushed.

10. Please feel free to ask any questions that you have about your health or wellness. We are here to help you understand the best way to take care of your spinal condition.

11. Report any change in your condition.

12. Read all information given to you. This information is meant to help you progress faster in your care and to learn how to take care of your spinal condition more effectively.

13. Tell others! Our mission is to make this a healthier world for everyone.
